Maine lumberjacks j
3 It being on Sunday morning,
They did not think it right; Some of them more willingly, While others did hang back.
4 Six of those bold shanty boys,
They volunteered to go, To break the jam on Gerry's rock, With their foreman, young Monroe.
5 When they got there to the jam,
The foreman and his crew, The logs were rolled up mountains high, T was a terror in their view.
6 "Prepare for action, my brave boys,
Your hearts avoid all fear, We'll break the jam on Gerry's rock, And the rigging will go clear."
7 They had not rolled off many logs
When the foreman he did say: " I 'd have you to be on your guard, For the jam will soon give way."
8 He had not more than spoke these words
When the logs did break and go; And it carried away these six brave boys And their foreman, young Monroe.
9 When their comrades at the camp
The sad news came to hear, To search for their dead bodies In the river they did prepare. |
